Mindy Kaling (born June 24, 1979) is an American actress, comedian, writer,
director, and producer. She is best known for creating and starring in the
comedy series The Mindy Project (2012–2017), for which she won a Primetime Emmy
Award for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series.
Kaling was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to immigrant Hindu parents from
India. She earned a BA in playwriting from Dartmouth College in 2001 and moved
to New York City to pursue a career in comedy. Her first major break was writing
and acting in the NBC comedy series The Office (2005–2013), on which she also
served as a producer and occasional director. She won a Primetime Emmy Award for
Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series for the episode "Niagara".
Kaling has since become an established actress, appearing in a wide range of
comedic and dramatic roles both on television and in film. She has produced,
written, and directed for both the big and small screens, receiving numerous
awards and nominations for her work. She starred in the comedy film Late Night
(2019).
In 2021, Kaling co-created HBO Max comedy-drama "The Sex Lives of College
Girls", which has been renewed for its third season.
Kaling has written two New York Times Bestsellers and is releasing a third book
in 2021, co-written with her mother, Swati Chokalingam.
Outside of her work in television and film, Kaling has lent her voice to various
animated projects, including Inside Out (2015) and Wreck-It Ralph Breaks the
Internet (2018). She is a board member at The Moth, a non-profit storytelling
organization.
