Roy Choi, a Korean-American chef born in 1970, gained fame for creating the gourmet Korean-Mexican taco truck, Kogi, and is a pioneer of the gourmet food truck movement. He co-hosted the Netflix series "The Chef Show" with Jon Favreau in 2019. Raised in Los Angeles, Choi's parents ran various businesses before settling in Orange County. Despite initially struggling in his youth, Choi found inspiration in Emeril Lagasse's cooking show and enrolled in culinary school. After training at the Culinary Institute of America, he worked in prestigious restaurants before venturing into food trucks. Choi's company, Kogi, revolutionized street food with its fusion of Mexican and Korean flavors. He has received accolades including being named one of Food and Wine magazine's "Best New Chefs" in 2010. Choi's career includes owning and operating several restaurants, writing an autobiography/cookbook titled "L.A. Son," and consulting on the film "Chef." Time magazine listed him in the TIME 100 for his influential role in the culinary world. Alongside chef Daniel Patterson, he opened LocoL, a restaurant aiming to provide quality, healthy fast food in underserved areas. Beyond cooking, Choi produces and hosts TV series and is involved in community initiatives such as teaching cooking and supporting local businesses. Despite battling addiction in his past, Choi now finds fulfillment in feeding people and is a proud father.
