Tamlyn Naomi Tomita is a Japanese-American actress born on January 27, 1966, known for her roles in The Karate Kid Part II, The Joy Luck Club, and The Good Doctor. Born on a U.S. military base in Okinawa, Japan, to a Japanese-American father and a mother of Okinawan and Filipino descent, Tomita grew up in Los Angeles. She attended UCLA with plans to become a history teacher but entered acting after being invited to audition for The Karate Kid Part II during Nisei Week in 1984. Tomita has had a successful career in both film and television, appearing in various roles, including recurring ones on shows like 24, Glee, Teen Wolf, and How to Get Away with Murder. In 2016, she starred in Berlin Station, and from 2017 to 2019, she had a recurring role on The Good Doctor. She also played Commodore Oh in Star Trek: Picard in 2020 and reprised her role as Kumiko in Cobra Kai in 2021. Tomita is involved in activism and narrated episodes of the PBS series Asian Americans, highlighting the importance of telling Asian American stories in the broader context of American history.
