Tammy Duckworth is an American politician and retired Army National Guard lieutenant colonel. Born on March 12, 1968, in Bangkok, Thailand, she is of Thai and Chinese descent. Duckworth's family moved to the United States, and she later joined the U.S. Army.
In 2004, while serving as a helicopter pilot during the Iraq War, Duckworth lost both of her legs and partial use of her right arm when her helicopter was shot down. Her military service and sacrifice garnered widespread recognition.
Transitioning to a political career, Duckworth became the first disabled woman to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012, representing Illinois. In 2016, she was elected to the U.S. Senate, becoming the first Thai-American woman and the second Asian-American woman to serve in the Senate.
Known for her advocacy on veterans' issues, women's rights, and healthcare, Duckworth continues to be a prominent figure in American politics, emphasizing the importance of diversity and inclusivity in public service.
